Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. She was an American poet, storyteller, activist, and author. She was a singer, dancer, actor, composer and Hollywood’s first black director, but she is most known for her work as a poet, essayist, editor and playwright. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were two of Angelou’s mentors in her work as a civil rights fighter. At Wake Forest University, she was a professor of American Studies and served as the Reynolds professor.
As a poet, Angelou’s work has frequently been praised more for its representations of Black beauty, the power and courage of women and their human spirit; her criticism of the Vietnam War; and, most importantly, its call for social justice for everyone. Although it was first published in 1971, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1972. “The first twenty poems show the complete gamut of love, from the initial instant of passionate discovery to the first sense of terrible loss,” says Carol Neubauer in Southern Women Writers. From the period of enslavement through the 1960s, “Angelou” focused on the lives of black people in America in other poems. Her themes revolve on racial oppression, the guilt of tolerating too much, and the need for survival and resistance.
